Back to The Train Job
Thinking back to the train job, I see that most of the characters are fairly similar, on a mission, and then there's Kayle who is a sweet little mechanic, but Inara. She is much different than the others, she is a companion who seems to mean every word she says; she's one of those super nice types. She's the only one in the show that could give anyone hope about the human race. Zoe and Kayle are sweet but they both are very easily swayed and cannot talk back/stand up for themselves too well. Inara is the type of person that needs to be on that ship to bring people to their senses. For example when shes brushing Kayle's hair and speaking to her like a friend, and Mal comes in to try to get some attention he tells him off right away: exactly what he needs. She is the sense of the ship, as the others plot and follow Mal's evil plans, Inara talks to Sheppard and tells him he should pray that they all return safely. Zoe is close to being like Inara but she blindly follows Mal, if she could only speak up. She is even the one that goes out of her way, risks her life to make sure people are saved from the train, she saves Mal and Zoey from the train. She even, after that offers to use her shuttle to return the cargo that Mal needs to take back, she is fairly selfless. She's probabbly the happiest about the return of the crates of medicine.

I think Inara is kind of mental counselor in this ship. Like you said, because she somtimes gives hope to people and talk to people about their concerns.
